Peace (symbol: ) is a quality describing a society or a relationship that is operating harmoniously. This is commonly understood as the absence of hostility, or the existence of healthy or newly-healed interpersonal or international relationships, safety in matters of social or economic welfare, the acknowledgment of equality and fairness in political relationships and, in world matters, peacetime; a state of being absent of any war or conflict. Reflection on the nature of peace is also bound up with considerations of the causes for its absence or loss. Among these potential causes are: insecurity, social injustice, economic inequality, political and religious radicalism, and acute racism and nationalism. From the Anglo-Norman pas , and meaning "freedom from civil disorder", the English word came into use in various personal greetings from c.1300 as a translation of the biblical terms pax (from the Vulgate) and Greek eirene, which in turn were renderings of the Hebrew shalom. Shalom, cognate with the Arabic "salaam", has multiple meanings: safety, welfare, prosperity, security, fortune, friendliness. The personalized meaning is reflected in a nonviolent lifestyle, which also describes a relationship between any people characterized by respect, justice and goodwill. This latter understanding of peace can also pertain to an individual's sense of himself or herself, as to be "at peace" with one's own mind attested in Europe from c.1200. The early English term is also used in the sense of "quiet", reflecting a calm, serene, and meditative approach to the family or group relationships that avoids quarreling and seeks tranquility — an absence of disturbance or agitation.

In many languages the word for peace is also used a greeting or a farewell, for example the Hawaiian word Aloha. In English the word peace is used as a farewell, especially for the dead as in Rest In Peace, RIP.

Are there any good alternatives to the Peace Corps?
Q. Would love to find something similar to the Peace Corps but with a shorter commitment. Also, I've heard that volunteers lose any chance of future federal clearance, which could hurt the chances of entering a career that the Peace Corps could prepare you for. Any suggestions? Preferably something overseas... As for the military, I wouldn't want to sell my soul to the oilman-in-chief that's currently in command.

A. Look into being a VISTA volunteer (another government program) or into some of the large non-profit agencies like Habitat for Humanity or educational programs. If you have a degree from a university or are working toward one, you can explore your field and talk to organizations that serve or work in your field. Perhaps you could land an internship or externship. Good luck!!! Thanks for wanting to volunteer, too.

does the peace corps always split up married couples?
Q. My wife and I were recently invited into peace corps service. They said we have different staging dates, and different departure dates. They also said we will live with differenr host families during the 3 month in country training. We will be separated right from the beginning although, we have been told that married couples go together. Nothing that we are being told now indicates that we are ever together. so, does the peace corps always split up married couples?

A. Instead of asking on Yahoo Answers, perhaps you should ask this question to the Peace Corps. They would have much better info than a bunch of crazy people in cyberspace. Call your recruiter. Call the DC office. Or talk to the placement office. Different staging and departure dates? That makes no sense. Groups don't usually travel separately. And staging is done together as a group. Are you even going to the same country? Does PC know you are even married? Did you put on your application that you are applying as a married couple? Did you interview together as a couple? They always place married couples together, although sometimes during training people can be apart. But they still will place you together at your site for the… [cont.]

Are there any programs like Peace Corps but with a shorter commitment?
Q. I really would love to volunteer, but the Peace Corps requires a two year commitment. I don't think I could commit 2 years. I would be willing to volunteer up to 1 year. I would prefer something in South America or Africa, but I'm willing to go wherever I am needed. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

A. You talk about what you *want* to do, but for placements of more than six months, organizations are going to require that you have a lot of experience: a professional skill that would be of value in the developing world and wouldn't take a job away from a local person, the ability to work (read, write and speak) in a language other than English, skills and experience that can lead to local people generating income, better feeding their families, improving children's health, etc., or that can lead to the transformation of key institutions, such as government, universities/schools or NGOs, and so forth. T Short-term placement agencies charge volunteers, or require these volunteers to pay their own way (flights, in-country transportation,… [cont.]
