What is the relationship between military occupation and military government?
Q. In the news, I often read about military occupation issues. Sometimes I see the subject of "military government" mentioned. So, I am wondering, what is the relationship between military occupation and military government? When does military occupation begin and when does military government begin? When (or via what criteria) do they end?

A. The Hague Conventions of 1907 specify that "territory is considered occupied when it is actually placed under the authority of the hostile army." William Birkhimer on page 33 of his opus Military Government and Martial Law (3rd edition, 1914) notes that: "The truth must be that a territory is militarily occupied when the invader dominates it to the exclusion of the former and regular government. The true test is exclusive possession." The form of administration by which an occupying power exercises government authority over occupied territory is called "military government." The US Constitution has placed no limit upon the war powers of the government, but they are regulated and limited by the laws of war. One of these powers is the… [cont.]

When were military haircuts officially used in the US Military and the official why they are used?
Q. I would like to know when and why were military haircuts incorporated in the US military? Or where is it officially stated the when and why of military haircuts? I have a general idea of when it was incorporated and why it is used in the military but I would like to see an official document that would state this. I have looked at many websites and military dress code manuals but could not find it. Maybe some of you military historians can answer this.

How would military enlistment numbers be affected if trade school and college were prepaid?
Q. Knowing many military enlistees join for lack of clear career and educational goals in high school, what if high school career counselors all did their jobs better and post-secondary education was fully funded (disregard how, for now)? How would this affect military enlistment stats? This question is not about commission candidates or those who'd wanted nothing else but to serve. It's only about the confused or disenfranchised who see no better alternative.
Asked by Monopolist - Thu Sep 24 20:43:16 2009 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I don't doubt that the number of enlistees would go down, but probably not nearly as much as many people would like to think. After many years in the military, the diversity of motivation surprised me. Some I know join for family tradition, or for patriotism. Some want to see the world. Some join because they want to do something meaningful and positive, to help people. Some join because all their friends joined. Some join because they are thugs and just want to kill people. Some, like myself, got it in their heads that they could be heroes and save people. Some do it because they're struggling financially and need the money. Some do it for the government benefits, like retirement, VA, educational benefits, after-service job… [cont.]

Why is the military spraying barium and aluminum particles in the atmosphere over populated areas?
Q. I've heard a couple of reasons. To combat global warming, the particles reflect UV rays from the sun. The military is experimenting with ways to make the atmosphere more conductive for the HARPE weapon. The military is experimenting with radar jamming techniques. Other reasons I've heard are a bit extreme and involve to much speculation. If anyone has any insight on this or knows of any activists groups out there trying to put a stop to these experiments/practices please respond. Thank you.

How will the military help me after college?

Asked by !>? - Thu Aug 20 23:46:14 2009 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. What benefits will prior military service give you in the civilian world is a very broad question. First of all, are you in college now or thinking of going to college, or do you have you bachelors? Educational wise you will be eligible for the GI Bill. The current bill the service member pays an initial $1200 or so and than in return receives $40,000 in return for college. You can also opt for an additional kicker around $600 or so and receive a larger sum of education assistance and it extends your time to use the funds. However this GI Bill hasn't been updated since 1944 and thankfully the government has realized this. There is a new GI bill in the works still pending approval, but it will give all prior service members about $80,000 to… [cont.]

What is the difference between military elites and special forces?
Q. I noticed that books specializing on military subjects call the U.S.M.C.,the 101st Airborne Division, the 82nd Airborne Division, the British Parachute Regiment, the Royal Marines, and the French Foreign Legion and other amphibious assault, paratrooper, and Air Mobile assault units military elites but not special forces. So what is a military elite and what seperates them from special forces? I mean what seperates a SAS commando or Navy Seal from a US Marine and 82nd Paratrooper or French Foreign Legionnaire?
Asked by Gobar G - Fri Jan 22 17:22:47 2010 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Military elite groups still operate in "normal" operational style. You put the Marines in front while storming the beach, but it is still a frontal assault. A special forces group is typically small, and operates semi-independently. A Navy SEAL force will go someplace quietly, and conduct a mission behind enemy lines.

A. I was in the military when I had my first two children, and now I am a military spouse and have just had my third. DO NOT rush into having children especially if your husband is in the military and could be deployed. Make sure you are OK with his work schedule and with him possibly being gone for long periods of time (at which time you become a single parent). I truly believe that too many women get pregnant too soon and then they become overwhelmed and can not handle what the military has to offer. Yes we have medical and a guaranteed paycheck and free housing if you choose it, but we don't always have a spouse. If you don't have personal experience with the military (ie you are prior military or maybe a parent was) don't rush it!!! It… [cont.]

A. I believe that tactics are more specific, whereas strategy is the overall plan. Strategy consists of tactics. In the case of nuclear weapons, tactical nuclear weapons are for use against military targets. Strategic nuclear weapons are for countervalue targets (usually cities).

What military branch is the easiest to get into?
Q. What military branch is the easiest to get into? Can a person who has some problems with urinating get into any of them? How hard is it to get a waiver? To be more specific, the problem urinating is: having trouble starting a stream sometimes. Sometimes it's extremely easy to start a stream, and other times, it's pretty hard and time consuming. Also, does the military give everyone some time off for themselves during the day (in boot camp and in service)? Because if they do, then that might be a good time to spend trying to use the restroom.

What branch of military should i join to become a criminal investigator?
Q. i need the military for college, hand to hand and weapons training, and when hiring criminal investigators military experience looks good. i hear the military is a good route to go for any kind of law enforcement. and i am aware you have to be a cop for a certain amount of time to get to criminal investigator, i want to use the military to get there i little quicker. does active duty help or hurt becoming a cop then criminal investigator? also what are psychology classes like in the military, are they different? i dont know why they would be but i heard from a few people that they were. please and thank you
Asked by SanGraal - Fri Jul 2 09:09:34 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The info you have heard is correct. You will not just become a criminal investigator in the military. Just like the civilian world, you have to work your way up. I have worked with many NCIS, CID, and other agents. It is a good field if that is your interest. The navy/marines have NCIS and the Army has CID. My advice is to join the Military Police branch. That way you get the feel of both police and investigating. You could always look into Intelligence field too. The military police handle things just a little different than the civilian but they are very much alike.

A. They each have different mission statements. Marine recon is just that; recon. They generally go out, scout, infiltrate and report back and directly fire. Seals are usually a quick reaction force. They land, rescue/recover and exit. Green Berets (SF) are longer term forces. Dropped behind lines, work with underground fighters, sabotage, etc. may be gone months. Like working with the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan early in the war. Ranger are basically elite army forces. Now these are very general and the jobs do overlap considerably as conditions mandate so none of this is carved in stone. Also Recon, Seals and SF personell often combine in team for various missions when required. Recon teams often have Navy Corpmen who may be… [cont.]

Can you have a military drivers license if your civilians license is suspended?
Q. A friend of mine is stationed at Ft. Campbell. He's been in the military for almost a year, but prior to getting into the military his license was suspended and is still suspended to this day. He's supposed to get it back in November. He tells me that since he has a military DL he can drive Humvees and other military vehicles. He never told me how he got a military DL so Im not sure what to believe. So is it possible that he has a DL on base, but not a civilian DL?

What fraction of the military is composed of people who might have joined a gang?
Q. I know the idea of a person who would otherwise be a gang member joining the military might offend some, in that the military is generally held in high esteem. But if you are a young person, inclined toward violence, it might be more appealing to be considered a hero for killing than being a criminal. I once suggested that some young people inclined toward violence might do just that, and it got a colleague of mine, a Vietnam vet, very angry. So, what do you think?
Asked by Tony_the_heretic - Fri Nov 13 19:57:16 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The army is the biggest gang you could join. But umm that's a question that could go any way. It just depends on where the people are recruited out of. If you live inner city maybe you were in a gang. If you live in the country maybe you killed Corn. But once you join the Army that stuff doesn't really matter anymore and you become a soldier and a specialist at what you do.
