Human resources is a term used to describe the individuals who comprise the workforce of an organization, although it is also applied in labor economics to, for example, business sectors or even whole nations. Human resources is also the name of the function within an organization charged with the overall responsibility for implementing strategies and policies relating to the management of individuals (i.e. the human resources). This function title is often abbreviated to the initials 'HR'. Human resources is a relatively modern management term, coined in the 1960s. The origins of the function arose in organizations that introduced 'welfare management' practices and also in those that adopted the principles of 'scientific management'. From these terms emerged a largely administrative management activity, co-ordinating a range of worker related processes and becoming known, in time as the 'personnel function'. Human resources progressively became the more usual name for this function, in the first instance in the United States as well as multinational corporations, reflecting the adoption of a more quantitative as well as strategic approach to workforce management, demanded by corporate management and the greater competitiveness for limited and highly skilled workers. Q. If an employee of 10 or more years is terminated and they ask for an appointment with HR to view their personnel folder, should the employer let them? Is there a law that requires the employer to do so if the employee request through the proper channels and they have an HR employee present while they view their folder? Why wouldn't an employee be able to view their personnel folder to see what the employer has placed in there. Asked by johnj1071 - Fri Jun 20 22:10:21 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Where I work, anyone can go through my personnel files! ANYONE! Anyone right off the street! It's because I technically work for the state and taxpayers can check it if they want and blah, blah, blah. It's a scary thought! As far as I know, no one has asked for it. So, since anyone can ask for it, I can certainly ask for it. I don't know where you're from, but I think by law you should be able to access your personnel file. Unless, of course, it's been quite a long time since you've terminated your position with that company. (I don't think they're required by law to keep personnel files so many years back.) I'd get in contact with the human resources department and ask for the proper procedure to access your file. I have a $ 227.00 difference between what my personnel action report from my bosses says and what actually shows up as my salary on my paycheck- shouldn't they match? Do they have to reimburse what they haven't paid? I just realized this has been going on for 6 months. Sorry I might sound confusing here- My report from my bosses is saying my current salary is $2951.00, but my paycheck (before anything is deducted) says $2,724.00 Asked by Whitney - Thu Jun 21 18:13:56 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. Ask at your HR or payroll department for an explanation. I'll give you a possibility. $227 is exactly 7.65% of $2951. Your employer's personnel action report includes the employer's contribution to your Social Security and Medicare. These contributions are made to the SSA on your behalf and do not appear on your paystub. It is an annoying technicality for this amount to be listed in your personnel action report, but not unknown. But, ask to make sure. Answered by ninasgramma - Thu Jun 21 22:52:28 2007 What majors at a community college would match for someone to be a personnel administrator?
Q. I have heard that I would be a good personnel administrator but for what? What would I have to major in to get there? Asked by Stacey R - Tue Apr 20 15:26:09 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Major in management if it is offered. If not, see if there are management classes in the business major. If not, major in psychology, which should be your minor when you transfer to a four-year college and major in management there. You need at least a bachelor's degree for a good career in this field.
