Anger is an emotion. The physical effects of anger include increased heart rate, blood pressure, and levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline. Some view anger as part of the fight or flight brain response to the perceived threat of harm. Anger becomes the predominant feeling behaviorally, cognitively, and physiologically when a person makes the conscious choice to take action to immediately stop the threatening behavior of another outside force. The English term originally comes from the term anger of Old Norse language. Anger can have many physical and mental consequences.

The external expression of anger can be found in facial expressions, body language, physiological responses, and at times in public acts of aggression. Humans and non-human animals for example make loud sounds, attempt to look physically larger, bare their teeth, and stare. Anger is a behavioral pattern designed to warn aggressors to stop their threatening behavior. Rarely does a physical altercation occur without the prior expression of anger by at least one of the participants. While most of those who experience anger explain its arousal as a result of "what has happened to them," psychologists point out that an angry person can be very well mistaken because anger causes a loss in self-monitoring capacity and objective observability.

Modern psychologists view anger as a primary, natural, and mature emotion experienced by all humans at times, and as something that has functional value for survival. Anger can mobilize psychological resources for corrective action. Uncontrolled anger can, however, negatively affect personal or social well-being. While many philosophers and writers have warned against the spontaneous and uncontrolled fits of anger, there has been disagreement over the intrinsic value of anger. Dealing with anger has been addressed in the writings of the earliest philosophers up to modern times. Modern psychologists, in contrast to the earlier writers, have also pointed out the possible harmful effects of suppression of anger. Displays of anger can be used as a manipulation strategy for social influence.

In the Seven Deadly Sins, anger is known as the sin Wrath.

Where can I find anger management classes for kids in my area?
Q. I have a kid I work with that could use an anger management class. Something he could do by himself or with me, but in a group setting with other people, preferably other kids. Any ideas or resources? I guess I m looking for websites or phone numbers - someplace where I can find classes. I live in California; looking for something in or around the Sacramento area. Willing to travel a little bit.

How do you keep your anger undercontrol with your pet?
Q. I have a pet chihuahua, and he is such a pain at times. He poop's and pee's in the house, after I repeatidly try taking him outside, in which he rarely ever does anything and He gets into every little thing he can find and most of the time chews it up. Any tips on how I can help keep my anger under control and not take it out on him? I don't want him to be afraid of me.

A. First of all, you need to remember that your dog has a brain the size of a peanut ( unshelled) Dogs thrive on praise. Keep trying, maybe try treats/praise when he does go outside. Animals are a HUGE commitment. Your dog is not peeing in the house to make you mad, he just is not sure what to do. You need to be VERY consistent with the potty training, even if it means taking him out every 1/2 hour. If you cannot watch him, crate him for a bit. Sometimes little dogs have a harder time with the concept of potty training. As for him chewing up your stuff, you need to treat your house as if there is a toddler in it. Everything should be put up. Good Luck!

What is good to take out repressed feelings of anger?
Q. As much as it pains me to say this, there are certain people who I really hate. They tend to pop into my head the most at night and I can't sleep cause I feel so much anger towards them. What's good to take out these repressed feelings?

A. I suffer from the same problem. There are just those some people who really tick you off, right? What I find a really good way of getting my anger out is exercise, particularly jogging. When I put my iPod on, and just keep running, it just shakes everything off. If you keep running and running you'll be too exhausted to think about it. If you do, a good way of taking out your anger is imaging in that you are confronting the person you hate, perhaps in a restaurant or at a social gathering (sorry I don't know hold you are) or if your older a club, and just imagine you are shouting your mouth off at them, telling them everything that you think of them. That always helps me.
